Rev. Janet McCune Edwards
The Rev. Janet McCune Edwards, Ph.D. has worn many hats in her 27 years of association with the East Liberty Family Health Care Center: patient, board member and chairperson, benefactor, capital campaign committee member, parent educator, spiritual director of the Center's spin-off Coordinated Care Network-and most of all-friend.
Janet (who with her husband Dr. Alvise Anti has two sons named Sebastian and Charles) is a Pittsburgh native who grew up in Eastminster Church. So when Eastminster gave birth to the Center, she wanted to become involved right away. First she became a patient, because she loved the Center's "utter assumption that the level of care was to be the same for all patients" and it would be nothing less than excellent. Gifted as a Moderator (Janet was Moderator of Pittsburgh Presbytery in 1987), Janet saw that her gifts could be used on the Board, where she quickly became its Chairperson. She has played a vital role in the Center's development in the toughest times (when Medicare seemingly reversed its decision on reimbursing for home visits) and in the best times (using her influence in our 1997-2000 capital campaign to help raise $5 million).
Janet's current ministry is as an advocate for justice, articulating issues going on the world and their connection to the gospel in a way that others may not see. She and Alvise are in the end stages of an exciting renovation of their century-old home to make it "green" for future generations. Janet has always had a special place in her heart for the Center's Homebound Elderly Outreach Program and wants to encourage United Way to continue its support of the program; so she has adopted a goal of $5,000 to hire an independent evaluator to objectively demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of this unique approach to helping seniors age with dignity at home.
