Mr. John Millar

John_Millar

John Millar has served as treasurer on the East Liberty Family Health Care Center Board of Directors for 25 years. He and his wife, Joan, have been married for 52 years. They have one son, David, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He is a retired Certified Public Accountant who also worked as a corporate officer at Sunbeam Corporation.

John believes that his spiritual gift is service. Throughout his life, he has found meaning and inspiration by supporting the church as it reaches out to serve others. John and Joan were two of the founders of the William and Mildred Orr Center for Compassionate Care (respite care facility, located just above the Center's East Liberty Office).

John is tied to the Center in many ways. He has been a patient since 1982, and board member since 1983 when he was asked to join by co-founder, Rev. Douglas Dunderdale. He has not only witnessed the health center grow from a one-room basement operation, but has been the primary liaison between the Center and Eastminster Presbyterian Church. John makes a practice of visiting both the Center and the Orr Center every Tuesday when he's out and about.

According to Mr. Millar, the work that is done by the health center is a representation of Christ going out into the world and "caring for the least of these". His wife, Joan, testifies to the Center's impact on community as it reaches out to people and helps those most in need. The Millars have no biological family in the area, but embrace the Center's staff as family. John identifies "Church Partnerships" as being the program that resonates most with him because patients and staff need the support of the churches. To that end, John has adopted a goal of raising $2,000 to help sustain the new Church Partnership Developer position.
