Sister Michele Van Voorst
Sister Michele Van Voorst has supported the East Liberty Family Health Care Center since its opening in 1982. She is originally from the Netherlands, but has resided in Pittsburgh for many years. She is a faithful member of the Ladies of Bethany, and a retired social and pastoral care worker. She continues to be dedicated to pastoral care through her volunteer work with East End Cooperative Ministry where she worked for 27 years. She enjoys helping in the food pantry and with Meals on Wheels. Her calling is to spend time with people who are disadvantaged both physically and spiritually. Sr. Michele identifies with the spiritual virtue of compassion, and likes inter-faith ministries that allow her to work with people from different religious backgrounds.
She became connected to the Center through a meeting with our founders, Dr. David Hall, and Stephen P. Paschall, Esq. She has since witnessed the Center grow from a basement operation to two primary care offices, two outreach sites in the East End, and the capacity to provide encounters with thousands of patients in the community. Sister Michele believes that the Center is uniquely important because
- The staff takes a very personal-yet professional - approach to patient care (people are NOT just numbers!)
- The staff takes a holistic approach to patient care
- The Center is a praying community for its patients and one another.
The Homebound Elderly Program resonates most with Sister Michele because she has seen the quality of care that our homecare nurses provide. She is impressed with our staff's eagerness to help in any way they can. Not only do the nurses visit patients, but they take them to medical appointments as well. As a pastoral care worker, she knows the challenges that the elderly face. To rally support for this mission, Sister Michele has adopted a goal of raising XXX to help the Center's homebound elderly patients.
