The Rev. Dr. Robert Downs is a faithful supporter of the East Liberty Family Health Care Center. He has been married to his wife Joan for 45 years. They have two children, Becky and Micah, and eight grandchildren.

Dr. Downs received an undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and a graduate degree from Princeton. His has been a pastor for 42 years, retiring from Emsworth United Presbyterian Church after 35 years of service there. Further, he was instrumental in developing a partnership between the Pittsburgh Presbytery and the Center Blantyre.

Both Dr. and Mrs. Downs are heavily involved in global missions. They spent two summers in India working as volunteers at Miraj Medical Center. They have also volunteered in Croatia and Venezuela. Preaching is a talent that Dr. Downs feels he was given for the purpose of spreading the gospel and building up the church. He says that he and Joan have great concern and interest for cross-cultural missions. They encourage others to get involved, and have inspired several members of Emsworth United Church to do missionary work in Malawi.

Dr. Downs has been involved with East Liberty Family Health Care Center since its inception. He has known the Center's Co-Founder, Rev. Douglas A. Dunderdale, and the Associate Executive Director, Mr. David R. Brewton, for many years. Dr. Downs provided leadership for 35 years to the missions committee of Emsworth United as it has, and continues to, support our mission of whole-person healthcare. He cares about the Center because it is "a wonderful expression of Christ's concern for people - people who would not receive quality healthcare any other way." He is impressed with the Center's personable approach in administering healthcare to people. Dr. Downs is particularly supportive of Church Partnerships because of his love for the ministry; Pediatrics because his wife was a kindergarten and 1st grade teacher; the Diabetes Program because his son has diabetes; and Dentistry because of his respect for Dr. Maslo's contribution to the Center.
